Learn About Modem Cum Router Inside Technology To Choose Best One

Modems and routers are the heart of internet . You have to read this article before buy a modem or a router for yourself . Its quality depends on the internal tecnology of the modem or router such as how much frequrency it uses, which type or encryption uses etc . In this article i write some brief basics about it ,which you have to now.

Frequency Band

At present there are two types of frequency bands in routers . 5 HHz and 2.4 GHz  . Some of routers are only use one frequency band but some of them use both of frequency for routing .

The two (2) types of frequencies that Linksys dual-band routers support are 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz.

The 5 GHz band has a shorter range compared to a 2.4 GHz band because in radio frequencies, the higher the frequency the shorter its range.  In other words, if you are using a lower frequency like the 2.4 GHz, the distance it will cover will be greater than the 5 GHz band.

Use of this feature

This particular feature of the router allows you to choose where to best connect your devices at home or in the office to ensure stability with your local network and Internet connection.

Encryption Algorithm (For Router Security)

Encryption algorithm is the key feature of router security . A router with weak encryption algorithm can be cracked easily . So you have to check this encryption type of your router .When you assign your wireless router with a key and assign an encryption method, it will scramble the data and only a laptop with the same key can unscramble that data.

Wireless router’s support multiple wireless encryption and authentication methods.

  • WEP (Wireless Equivalent Protocol)
  • WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access)
  • WPA2 (Wi-Fi Protected Access 2)
  • SSID (Service Set Identifier) Broadcast
  • Mac Address Control

WEP and WPA protected only routers are easily hack able . But WPA2 , SSID broadcast and mac address controled routers are more secured . Suppose your router support WPA2 and SSID broadcast both method it means it is more secured that the router which use only WPA2 only .

Routing Protocol

A routing protocol specifies how routers communicate with each other. Routing algorithms determine the specific choice of route. Each router has a priori knowledge only of networks attached to it directly. A routing protocol shares this information first among immediate neighbors, and then throughout the network. This way, routers gain knowledge of the topology of the network.

Some of popular routing protocols are as following .

  • INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR ROUTING
  • RIP
  • OSPF
  • BGP
  • IGRP

Max Transfer Rate

The higher the data transfer rate, the faster the modem, but the more it costs. A faster modem can save you money by cutting down on your long-distance charges.

Modem are available in 54 mbps to 3200 mbps max transfer rate .

Antenna Qty

Antenna qty impact on the signal strength of the modem . So it is obvious more antennas means strong signal strength .

Connectivity Technology

Modems and router have different types of connectivity technology such as wired, wireless. Check that if your modem support to both or just only one .

Wireless Application Protocol

Always try to choose the latest wireless protocol model .

WAP is the set of rules governing the transmission and reception of data by computer applications on or via wireless devices like mobile phones. WAP allows wireless devices to view specifically designed pages from the Internet using only plain text and very simple black-and-white pictures.

WAP is a standardized technology for cross-platform, distributed computing very similar to the Internet’s combination of Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) and Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), except that it is optimized for:

LTE and Wi-Fi is the high speed wireless protocols in a modern modem or router .

Learn some details about Wireless protocols

802.11 b –> only 2.4Ghz  with 20Mhz as bandwidth

802.11 a–> only 5Ghz with 20Mhz as badnwidth

802.11 g–> only 2.4Ghz with 20Mhz as bandwidth(this is similar to 802.11b but the modulation scheme which it uses is OFDM which is used in 802.11a)

802.11 n–> this supports both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz bands and we can have either 20Mhz or 40Mhz(only with a radio).

Compliant Standards

Standardscompliance is the compliance of a router or a modem tells that which standard are used to interoperability .

Remote Management Protocol

Using the Remote Management menu, you can allow a user on the Internet to configure, upgrade and check the status of your Router. If you are not a advance user then avoid this feature . Because a hacker might try to break your router password.

WAN Ports Qty

You have to decide that how much LAN ports are required to you before purchase the modem cum router .

Up gradable Firmware

Up gradable firmware is also a biggest feature any modem or router . If this feature is available in your device it means you can update your modem or router when company release the update .Learn more about firmware .
